Camping bliss in the middle of greenery
Outdoor fun in the Dutch nature paradise
Anyone who associates the Netherlands solely with a holiday by the North Sea is really doing the country an injustice. In the middle of the countryside, just over the German-Dutch border near Hengelo, lies the enchanting Papillon Country Resort – a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is a great starting point for cycling tours, easy hikes or varied exploratory tours for young and old.
Are you looking for a hideaway in the middle of the countryside? A country idyll for the whole family in the middle of fields and forests, far away from urban hustle and bustle, noise and overflow? In Twente, not far from Hengelo, Enschede and Bentheim in Lower Saxony, we have found it for you: the Papillon Country Resort – a 5-star campsite for nature-loving families and outdoor enthusiasts. It can be reached quickly and easily from North Rhine-Westphalia. The ideal place for a time-out or an active break in between.
Cycling, swimming, fishing – everything is possible here in the midst of nature While dad enjoys the peace and quiet, casts his rod at the fishing pond and waits for a big catch, the children have lots of fun with their new friends, whom they have met right away at one of the many children’s playgrounds. Great fun and frolics are the order of the day, thanks to a professional animation team that comes up with new game ideas every day. Mum is drawn to the outdoor fitness course – finally she has enough time to do something for her fitness and health. In the afternoon, the family meets at the swimming pond: a few “speed enthusiasts” are already waiting at the big slide, and they also can’t wait to rush down into the cool water. Who will make it to the climbing island on the lake? The great thing is that even if the weather is not so nice, you can still have a fun day at Papillon Country Resort. There is an indoor pool with a children’s slide, a separate paddling pool and a playful water spray park outside. The indoor Spotty Land is the place to be: instead of outdoors, it’s now simply indoors.
The next day, exploration tours in the region are on the agenda: Would you rather go cycling or on an easy hike? It’s not so easy to make a decision. All right, then we’ll go cycling today, and tomorrow we’ll go hiking in Twente – luckily the holiday lasts a few days. As a reward for all this activity, we go to a nice, modern restaurant in the evening – the dishes on the menu sound tempting.
Tip for the next cycling tour:
The new, wide cycle path along the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal allows for relaxed and safe cycling largely without car traffic. The 44-kilometre route leads through green nature and can be easily experienced in one day. Historical sights such as a peat barge from the 18th century or the oldest aqueduct in the Netherlands are a must-see. If you like flora and fauna, you will be thrilled: along the canal and the Vechte, a native orchid, the spotted orchid, is in bloom, and in the Bergvennen nature reserve, the rare water lobelia is in flower. With a bit of luck, you can even watch the colourful kingfishers along the canal.
