Traffic signs for motorhomes
Which road signs you should pay particular attention to with your motorhome.
Travelling by motorhome or camper van stands for freedom and adventure. But to reach the most beautiful places safely, it is important to know the traffic regulations and understand the road signs correctly. This means that all road users are safe on the roads. In our Tips & Tricks article, we have therefore summarised the most important road signs for motorhomes and briefly explain their function.
Traffic sign weight
Weight plates indicate the maximum weight permitted for roads and bridges. You should observe the following to avoid overloading and fines.
If your vehicle exceeds the total weight of 5.5 tonnes, the following route may not be used and must be avoided.
The same applies to vehicles with a total mass of over 3.5 tonnes – in this case, the corresponding traffic sign signals a no passing zone.
The weight must also be taken into account on multi-lane roads. Vehicles with a total mass of over 3.5 tonnes are obliged to use the right-hand lane. If the vehicle weighs less than 3.5 tonnes, the other two lanes may also be used.
Traffic sign height and width
After weight restrictions, height and width restrictions are also crucial to ensure that vehicles do not pass in unsuitable places.
A transit ban applies to vehicles that exceed a height of 3.8 metres, including all main cabins on the roof such as SAT antennas, railings and similar components. This sign also exists for a height of 2.9 metres.
Passage ban for vehicles, including motorhomes, that exceed a width of 2 metres with exterior rear view mirrors and load.
No overtaking
The traffic sign indicates a ban on overtaking for vehicles whose total weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes.
Traffic signs Parking
Parking for motorhomes is also permitted at this sign.
Parking on pavements is not permitted for vehicles with a total mass of over 2.8 tonnes, as the substructure of these paths is not designed for higher loads.
The car parks marked with this additional sign are reserved exclusively for motorhomes.
